Delta Rome Bound Flight Struck By Lightning

Delta Rome-bound flight struck by lightning

Planned transatlantic flight forced to return to Logan after lightning hits near Nova Scotia

A Delta Air Lines flight from Boston to Rome was forced to turn around and head back to Logan Airport Sunday evening after being struck by lightning.

Delta flight 112 departed Boston at 6:05 p.m. EDT on Sunday, Aug. 4, 2024, and was scheduled to land in Rome at 9:55 a.m. local time on Monday, Aug. 5. However, the flight was diverted back to Logan after being struck by lightning near Nova Scotia.

The plane landed safely at Logan at 8:15 p.m. EDT, and no injuries were reported.

Delta said in a statement that the flight was struck by lightning "while cruising at approximately 36,000 feet over the Atlantic Ocean." The airline said the plane's systems were not affected by the lightning strike, and the crew made the decision to return to Logan "out of an abundance of caution."

Delta said it is working to rebook passengers on other flights to Rome.
