The Perils of Downy Mildew: A Recurring Threat to the French Wine Industry

A Look Back at a Devastating Invasion

From North America to French Vineyards

In the year 2024, the French wine industry finds itself once again grappling with the recurring scourge of grapevine downy mildew. This relentless fungal disease, caused by the pathogen Plasmopara Viticola, has plagued vineyards in France since its first appearance in 1878. Its devastating impact has left a lasting legacy on the country's viticulture, threatening the very livelihood of winemakers.

A History of Destruction

Downy mildew's journey to France began in North America, where it wreaked havoc on grapevines in the mid-19th century. The fungus thrives in humid conditions, with temperatures between 11°C and 30°C. Upon reaching France in Coutras in 1878, the disease spread rapidly through the Southern and Central regions, causing widespread devastation.

Downy mildew attacks all above-ground parts of the vine, leaving behind telltale yellow or brown patches on leaves. Infected leaves eventually wither and drop, weakening the plant and reducing yields. In severe cases, downy mildew can lead to total crop loss.
